APNIC 62 brings global Internet community to Mumbai, puts AI and cybersecurity in focus
More than 600 Internet experts and policymakers are meeting in Mumbai for APNIC 62, focusing on AI, cybersecurity, IPv6, routing security and the infrastructure needed for a resilient digital future.
The conference, being held from September 4 to 10, comes as the rapid growth of AI-powered services and digital applications places increasing demands on the networks and infrastructure underpinning the Internet.
MUMBAI: More than 600 Internet experts, policymakers and technology leaders are gathering in Mumbai for APNIC 62, with artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, network resilience and future-ready Internet infrastructure taking centre stage.
Hosted by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Government of Maharashtra, the conference is being organised by the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC).
The conference, being held from September 4 to 10, comes as the rapid growth of AI-powered services and digital applications places increasing demands on the networks and infrastructure underpinning the Internet.
AI, cybersecurity and network resilience
APNIC 62 brings together technical experts, network operators, policymakers and Internet community leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the Internet.
Key areas of discussion include AI-powered services, network automation, cybersecurity, routing security and Internet governance.
“As India’s digital ecosystem continues to expand, ensuring secure, resilient and future-ready Internet infrastructure remains a key priority,” said Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary, MeitY.
He said APNIC 62 provides an important platform for India to engage with the Asia Pacific technical community, exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration towards an open, inclusive and trusted Internet.
Distinguished guests at the event include MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan and Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal.
APNIC Director General Jia Rong Low said AI and other major technical and societal shifts were placing unprecedented demands on the networks supporting economies and societies.
“APNIC 62 brings the region’s Internet community together to turn shared expertise into practical action for a more secure, resilient and scalable Internet,” Low said.
He also pointed to India’s leadership in IPv6 adoption, saying Mumbai provided a natural setting for the Asia Pacific Internet community to exchange experience and plan for the continued growth of the Internet.
NIXI, ISPAI highlight India’s role
NIXI CEO Dr. Devesh Tyagi said the organisation was proud to host APNIC 62 at a time when India’s digital economy and Internet infrastructure were expanding rapidly.
He said the conference would provide an opportunity to share India’s experience, learn from regional experts and strengthen cooperation for a secure, resilient and inclusive Internet.
ISPAI President Rajesh Chharia said Internet service providers were at the frontline of meeting the growing demand for reliable, secure and high-performing connectivity.
He said APNIC 62 would enable operators from across the Asia Pacific to share practical experience, strengthen technical cooperation and prepare their networks for emerging requirements.
IPv6 and routing security MoU
A key development on the sidelines of the conference will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NIXI and APNIC on September 8.
The proposed MoU will focus on enhancing the deployment of key Internet infrastructure technologies, particularly IPv6 and routing security.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the security and resilience of India’s Internet infrastructure and supporting its long-term development.
Opening ceremony to focus on AI and cybersecurity
The opening ceremony will feature keynotes from Amajit Gupta, CEO and Managing Director of Lightstorm Group, on AI-driven network automation, and Yukako Uchida of JPCERT/CC on the role of trust and cooperation in cybersecurity.
With AI workloads, cloud services and digital applications expanding rapidly, the discussions at APNIC 62 are expected to focus increasingly on the technical foundations required to maintain reliable connectivity and secure the Internet at scale.
What is APNIC?
APNIC is the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, the region’s not-for-profit Internet number registry. It manages critical Internet resources, including Internet addresses and network identifiers, across 56 economies in the Asia Pacific region.
Its role is technical rather than regulatory or political, working with organisations ranging from major global network providers to community networks to support an open, stable and secure Internet.
