New Delhi, November 19: President Droupadi Murmu presented the sixth National Water Awards and the Jal Sanchay–Jan Bhagidari Awards in New Delhi on Tuesday, emphasising that effective water management is possible only through the combined efforts of individuals, families, communities and governments.

Addressing the gathering, the President said the history of human civilisation is deeply linked to rivers, lakes and natural water bodies, which have shaped settlements and cultural traditions. She noted that India has long revered its water sources, reflected even in the national song where Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s opening word, Sujalam, signifies “blessed with abundant water resources.”

Murmu said efficient water use is now a global necessity, and even more critical for India due to limited water resources in proportion to its population. She warned that climate change is disrupting natural water cycles, making collaborative action essential to maintain water availability and ensure long-term water security.

Highlighting last year’s Jal Sanchay–Jan Bhagidari initiative, the President said more than 35 lakh groundwater recharge structures have been created across the country, demonstrating the impact of community-led water conservation efforts. She added that India’s industries are increasingly adopting circular water economy systems, with many achieving zero liquid discharge through treatment and recycling.

The President stressed the need for sustained efforts at all levels—central and state governments, district administrations, village panchayats and municipal bodies—to prioritise water conservation. She also acknowledged contributions from educational institutions, citizen groups and NGOs working to promote sustainable water practices.

Murmu encouraged farmers and entrepreneurs to embrace innovative techniques that reduce water use while increasing productivity. She said responsible individuals also play a crucial role in the “water-prosperity value chain,” reminding everyone that water is a precious asset demanding respect and mindful usage.

Drawing from the ethos of tribal communities, the President said natural resources, including water, must be treated with reverence. She urged all citizens to embed efficient water use into their lifestyle and stay vigilant about conservation. Spreading awareness, she said, is vital to bringing water consciousness into the national mindset.

The National Water Awards aim to recognise excellence in water conservation and promote best practices across sectors. The Jal Sanchay–Jan Bhagidari initiative continues to support scalable community-based models for artificial groundwater recharge and sustainable water management.
