New Delhi, August 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, marking what he described as another step in balancing development with responsibility.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister drew parallels between the new MP housing and broader national initiatives, noting that while the country fulfills the need for homes for public representatives, it is also facilitating homeownership for 4 crore poor families through the PM Awas Yojana. “The nation today not only builds Kartavya Path and Kartavya Bhavan but also fulfills its duty to provide piped water to millions of citizens,” he said.

The four residential towers—Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly—are named after major Indian rivers, symbolizing unity and vitality. Modi said the modern complex will ease accommodation challenges faced by MPs, particularly first-time members, and free them from issues common in older housing, allowing more focus on public service.

Saving public funds, boosting efficiency

Recalling the recent inauguration of Kartavya Bhavan, the Prime Minister highlighted that ministries previously operating from rented premises were costing the exchequer nearly ₹1,500 crore annually. He said the shortage of MP residences also increased government expenditure, with no new housing built between 2004 and 2014. Since 2014, about 350 units have been completed, including the newly inaugurated flats, helping to cut costs.

Sustainable and inclusive design

The complex incorporates solar-enabled infrastructure, adheres to GRIHA 3-star green rating norms, and complies with the National Building Code 2016. Built using monolithic concrete with aluminium shuttering, the structures are earthquake-resistant and Divyang-friendly, with modern amenities, dedicated office spaces, community facilities, and robust security systems.

Urging MPs to embody the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, Modi encouraged collective celebration of regional festivals, public engagement through invitations to constituents, and learning each other’s regional languages. He emphasised sustainability and cleanliness as defining features, suggesting Swachhata competitions among MP residential complexes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union ministers, and MPs were present at the event. The Prime Minister also planted a Sindoor sapling on the premises and interacted with shramjeevis involved in the project’s construction.
