New Delhi, August 5: NITI Aayog on Monday released a landmark report titled “Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India,” offering a comprehensive roadmap to accelerate the country’s electric mobility transition and catalyze large-scale investments across the EV ecosystem.

The report was launched by Rajiv Gauba, Member, NITI Aayog, in the presence of BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO, NITI Aayog; Kamran Rizvi, secretary, ministry of heavy industries; OP Agarwal, distinguished fellow, and Sudhendu Sinha, programme director – e-mobility, NITI Aayog.

Highlighting the report’s significance, Gauba stated, “India stands at the cusp of a transformative shift in clean mobility. As the nation advances its electric mobility ambition, this report provides valuable insights and policy-aligned recommendations to overcome existing barriers and unlock scale.”

India aims for 30% of total vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. While EV sales surged from just 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.08 million in 2024, the report notes that India’s transition began slowly but has gained momentum. EV penetration in the country rose from one-fifth of global levels in 2020 to more than two-fifths in 2024—reflecting progress but still trailing behind leading markets.

Developed through seven extensive stakeholder consultations hosted by NITI Aayog, the report outlines key barriers, strategic unlocks, and actionable next steps to fast-track EV adoption. It calls for coordinated efforts, cross-sector collaboration, and bold policy interventions to reach scale and secure India’s position in the global EV landscape.

“The report serves as a blueprint for the next phase of India’s EV journey,” said Subrahmanyam. “It not only highlights the challenges but also suggests actionable pathways for industry and government stakeholders to work together.”
