New Delhi, August 7: In a move aimed at modernizing its mail delivery infrastructure, the Department of Posts has announced the rationalization of its domestic mail products, integrating the processing of Registered Post and Speed Post items to streamline operations, reduce transit delays, and enhance network connectivity.

The initiative, part of a broader modernization plan, unifies sorting and handling processes for both services. This back-end integration is expected to significantly boost delivery timelines and optimize the use of logistics resources across the country.

While both Registered Post and Speed Post remain accountable services—maintaining detailed tracking at every stage—their delivery protocols differ. Registered Post remains addressee-specific, delivered only to the intended recipient or an authorized representative. Speed Post continues as an address-specific service, delivered to any person present at the address.

Under the revised framework:

  • Speed Post Letters and Speed Post Parcels will follow address-specific delivery.
  • Items booked as Speed Post with registration will be delivered addressee-specific, combining security with speed.

Customers booking Speed Post with registration will continue to benefit from core registration features while gaining access to enhanced premium services such as:

  • End-to-end online tracking
  • Real-time delivery updates
  • OTP-based secure delivery
  • Cash on Delivery (COD) options
  • Credit facilities for bulk users
  • Volume-based discounts
  • National Account Facility for corporate clients

The Department of Posts said the rationalized mail structure is part of the government’s efforts to align postal services with changing market demands and rising customer expectations, while reinforcing its commitment to efficiency, security, and modernization.
