New Delhi, October 20: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a Singrauli-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, is actively implementing the Special Campaign 5.0 under the Ministry of Coal’s guidance, aligning with the Prime Minister’s call for cleanliness, efficiency, and sustainability across government institutions.

The campaign focuses on cleanliness drives, record management, scrap disposal, and environmental innovation across all operational areas of NCL.

Transforming Scrap into Symbolic Art

In a creative push towards the “Waste to Beauty” vision, NCL is installing sculptures of India’s National Bird – the Peacock – and the Barasingha, crafted entirely from iron scrap generated during mining operations. The striking artwork highlights NCL’s commitment to environmental stewardship and circular economy practices, showcasing how industrial by-products can be transformed into aesthetic and educational assets.

Promoting Sanitation and Sustainable Practices

Reinforcing its focus on community health and hygiene, NCL has installed five bio-toilets across its project sites to promote sustainable sanitation for workers and nearby residents. These bio-toilets, designed with minimal environmental impact, are part of NCL’s efforts to advance the Swachh Bharat Mission and improve quality of life in mining regions.

Students Champion ‘Waste to Art’ Movement

As part of its public outreach, NCL organized a “Waste to Art” competition at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Singrauli, on October 17. Students showcased innovative ideas on recycling and reusing scrap materials, emphasizing the role of youth in promoting responsible waste management and environmental conservation.

Ambitious Cleanliness and Record Management Targets

Under Special Campaign 5.0, NCL has outlined an extensive action plan, including:

  • Cleaning 75 locations across operational areas
  • Covering 85,000 square feet under sanitation drives
  • Disposing of 2,500 metric tonnes of scrap
  • Reviewing 350 physical files and 9,000 e-files for record optimization

These efforts are designed to improve administrative efficiency while contributing to the government’s broader vision of a cleaner and greener India.

Sustainability at the Core of Operations

Through its continuous participation in Special Campaign 5.0, NCL is integrating sustainability and community engagement into the core of its operations. The company’s innovative use of scrap, promotion of bio-sanitation, and proactive cleanliness measures reaffirm its leadership role in responsible mining and social responsibility.
