Shubman Gill Set to Break Multiple Don Bradman Records, Eyes Indian Legends’ Milestones Too

Shubman Gill is on the brink of rewriting cricket history as he continues a sensational run in the ongoing Test series against England. With three matches still to be played in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill is well-positioned to surpass multiple world records set by the legendary Don Bradman, as well as significant Indian records held by icons like Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar.

So far, Gill has amassed 585 runs in just the first two Tests, including a phenomenal 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second during the Edgbaston Test. That performance not only helped India level the series but also propelled him past Virat Kohli’s record for most runs by an Indian captain in an innings, and Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian in a Test match. Additionally, Gill became the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA countries, and the first-ever batter globally to notch both a double hundred and a 150 in the same Test.

With three Tests to go, Gill is now in pursuit of four world records set by Don Bradman, some of which have remained untouched for nearly a century.

Most Runs in a Test Series as Captain:
Bradman scored 810 runs as captain during the 1936–37 Ashes series — a record for a debut series as skipper. Gill, who already has 585, needs just 225 more runs to surpass that milestone.

Most Runs in a Test Series (Overall):
The highest run tally in a single Test series is 974, set by Bradman during the 1930 Ashes. Gill is currently 390 runs away from breaking this legendary mark — a tough task, but possible considering his red-hot form. Interestingly, Gill’s 585-run start is better than Bradman’s 394 in the first two Tests of that series.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar believes Gill has a genuine chance:
“I hope he does it. He’s in excellent form, and he certainly has the opportunity to go all the way.”

Fastest to 1000 Test Runs as Captain:
Bradman reached 1000 Test runs as captain in just 11 innings, the fastest ever. Gill currently needs 415 runs in his next six innings to match that feat. It’s a challenging target, but not out of reach given his current consistency.

Most Hundreds in a Test Series:
With three centuries in just two matches, Gill is closing in on Clyde Walcott’s record of five centuries in a single series (set in 1955). Even Bradman’s best as a captain was four centuries in a series. Gill needs just two more to equal Bradman and three to create a new all-time record.

Apart from Bradman’s records, Gill is also eyeing some notable Indian benchmarks:

  • He needs 148 runs to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 runs, the most by an Indian captain in a single series (1978–79).

  • Just 18 runs away from overtaking Rahul Dravid’s 602, the most by an Indian in a Test series in England.

  • 127 runs short of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 712, the highest by any Indian batter against England in a series.

  • Only 91 runs behind Virat Kohli’s 655 runs, the highest by an Indian captain against England.

If Gill maintains his form, cricket fans may witness history being made across multiple fronts — both globally and in Indian cricket’s record books.
