Popular Riverfront Turns into Haven for Anti-Social Elements

PUNE: The ₹4,700-crore Riverfront Development (RFD) project, envisioned to transform 44.4 km along the Mula-Mutha river into a vibrant public space, is facing growing concerns as several sections have become hotspots for anti-social activities.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had aimed to make the riverfront a cultural and recreational hub with landscaped promenades, cycling tracks, open-air theatres, wellness zones, and gardens. However, the ground reality on certain stretches is far from this vision.

Instead of attracting families and tourists, some parts of the riverfront have witnessed vandalism, substance abuse, illegal gatherings, and poor maintenance, raising safety and sanitation concerns among citizens.

Local residents and civic groups have urged the PMC to deploy more security personnel, improve lighting, and accelerate maintenance efforts to restore the original purpose of the project. While portions of the development remain active and well-utilized, officials now face increasing pressure to reclaim the riverfront and ensure it remains a safe, inclusive, and scenic space for all.
