Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could make their much-anticipated return to the India ODI squad in August, provided the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gives the nod to Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) proposal for a short white-ball series.
Sri Lanka approached the BCCI with a request to fill the void left by the cancellation of India’s August tour to Bangladesh. The proposal includes three ODIs and three T20Is, similar to the scrapped Bangladesh series, which has now been deferred to 2026 due to security and scheduling concerns.
The BCCI has yet to confirm its decision. According to sources, the matter is under review, and a response will follow consultations with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The upcoming Asia Cup, still awaiting government clearance, is also a key factor influencing scheduling decisions.
If approved, this tour could mark the return of Rohit and Kohli to India’s ODI setup, their primary focus since stepping back from Test and T20I formats after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The two have not featured in India’s current Test tour of England, and this series may serve as critical preparation for future ICC tournaments.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, currently in London, is expected to lead discussions with the team’s top management and senior players before a formal decision is made. These talks are expected to cover both the Sri Lanka tour and the status of the Asia Cup, which is tentatively scheduled for September 17–27.
The original Bangladesh tour was postponed due to “international commitments,” but rising regional tensions reportedly played a significant role in the delay.
If the Sri Lanka series materializes, it will give India’s ODI squad, including Rohit and Kohli, valuable match time ahead of the Asia Cup and future international assignments. For now, Indian fans await a green signal — and potentially, a reunion with two of the game’s modern-day greats in national colours.
