New Delhi: In a shocking case of revenge and violence, 23-year-old Nikhil Kumar was arrested from Haldwani, Uttarakhand, on Wednesday for allegedly murdering his former partner Sonal Arya and a six-month-old infant at Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila. The infant was the daughter of Arya’s friend, Rashmi Devi.
According to police, Nikhil was enraged over Arya’s recent abortion, which he suspected had been done with the help of Durgesh Kumar, Rashmi Devi’s husband. Sonal had been living at the couple’s residence after separating from Nikhil in January due to ongoing abuse. She had also filed a police complaint against him on June 24.
“Nikhil believed Arya was pregnant with his child and blamed Durgesh for helping her terminate the pregnancy. On Tuesday, he purchased a surgical blade from Durgesh’s mobile repair shop and used it to slit the throats of both Arya and the infant,” said North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia.
The accused, a food delivery agent by profession, was apprehended in Haldwani after fleeing the scene. Police say the killings were premeditated, driven by suspicion and misplaced vengeance.
The brutal murders have sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over violence against women and children in domestic relationships. The investigation is ongoing.
