Mumbai: The National Conference on “Innovation and Evidence in Unani Practice”, organised by Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, laid out an evidence-driven roadmap for mainstreaming Unani healthcare, with the exchange of nine MoUs, conferment of NABL certification to laboratories, and launch of new digital and research platforms emerging as major outcomes.
Held at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre alongside Unani Day 2026 celebrations on February 14-15, the two-day event brought together scholars, policymakers, researchers, industry representatives and practitioners to deliberate on strengthening scientific validation, research standards and global outreach.
Institutional Strengthening and Infrastructure Boost
A key highlight was the conferment of NABL certification to laboratories of the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Mumbai, enhancing credibility in drug standardisation and quality testing.
The renovated Co-location Centre at the historic J. J. Hospital campus was also inaugurated, strengthening clinical research, patient-care integration and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Scientific Validation and Digital Integration in Focus
Nine thematic scientific sessions spotlighted advancements in Unani drug development, evidence-based research, translational medicine, Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (dietotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Tadbir (regimenal therapies), genomics and artificial intelligence applications in Unani R&D.
Experts emphasised the need for stronger clinical validation, standardised protocols, integration of modern diagnostics and digital tools, and expanded academic collaboration to position Unani medicine within the framework of evidence-based healthcare.
Collaborations and Knowledge Platforms
The conference saw the exchange of one international and eight national MoUs to deepen research partnerships.
New CCRUM publications and a conference souvenir were released, while a Collaborative Expression of Interest web portal and mobile applications were launched to facilitate structured research engagement. A questionnaire for assessment of Mizāj Insā — a core diagnostic concept in Unani — was also presented.
Appreciation certificates were awarded for best research papers and institutional contributions, reinforcing a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation.
The deliberations collectively reaffirmed innovation, scientific rigor, digital integration and global collaboration as essential pillars for expanding the reach and acceptance of Unani medicine in national and international healthcare systems.
