Barbie has introduced its first-ever doll with Type 1 diabetes, as part of its effort to promote inclusivity and health awareness. This new addition is part of the popular Fashionistas line, aimed at reflecting real-life diversity.
The doll features a small glucose monitor on her arm, secured with heart-shaped medical tape, symbolizing the day-to-day health routines of those living with diabetes. She also comes with a smartphone displaying a glucose tracking app and wears an insulin pump around her waist for automatic insulin delivery.
Dressed in a blue polka dot outfit and carrying a pastel blue purse, the doll is both stylish and practical—highlighting the importance of carrying medical supplies like snacks or insulin kits as part of regular life.
This meaningful release from Barbie is designed to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes and support children who manage the condition, showing that health management can be seamlessly woven into everyday experiences.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, children with Type 1 diabetes should be treated like other children but must wear a medical alert bracelet for safety.
Type 1 diabetes is a long-term autoimmune condition that requires daily insulin shots for management.
The new doll was created in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D, a research group dedicated to diabetes.
Barbie dolls will be donated to the 2025 Children’s Congress, where kids with diabetes meet U.S. lawmakers to share their experiences.
Barbie’s team worked closely with experts to ensure the doll realistically represents a child living with Type 1 diabetes.
The doll features authentic medical tools like a glucose monitor, insulin pump, and tracking app to reflect real-life care routines.
Krista Berger from Mattel stated that this doll helps kids see their own lives and challenges reflected in the toys they play with.
“Introducing a Barbie with T1D is part of our commitment to inclusivity,” Berger said, adding that Barbie should help children feel represented.
In July 2024, Mattel launched its first Barbie for visually-impaired children with features like a white and red cane, sunglasses, and realistic eye details.
Developed with AFB and RNIB, this doll includes touch-friendly clothing and braille writing on the box to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
