The 24-year-old first-year law student, who was allegedly gang-raped on June 25 on the premises of South Calcutta Law College, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing investigation by the Kolkata Police, her lawyer informed the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.
The case, which sparked public outrage and political storm, involves serious accusations against a former student and two seniors—identified as Monojit Mishra (prime accused), Promit Mukherjee, and Zaib Ahmed. Security guard Pinaki Banerjee has also been arrested, after police found his responses during interrogation to be inconsistent.
According to the survivor, the incident occurred in the college’s security guard room between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on June 25.
During Thursday’s hearing, the Calcutta High Court directed the Kolkata Police to submit a fresh progress report within four weeks, as legal and political scrutiny intensifies. The directive came amid demands from opposition leaders for a central agency probe and concerns about the integrity of the local investigation.
A BJP fact-finding team has raised suspicions of deliberate tampering with the survivor’s initial complaint. The team alleged that the names of the accused originally written by the survivor were replaced with initials “J”, “G”, “S”, and “M” in the FIR. “When the police tamper with the complaint itself, how can one expect justice?” former Union Minister and ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Satya Pal Singh said, speaking to PTI.
The police, however, have defended their investigation, pointing to the swift arrests and ongoing inquiries.
With political pressure mounting and the court now closely monitoring the case, the focus remains on ensuring a fair, transparent, and speedy probe into one of the most disturbing campus-related crimes in recent memory.
