New Delhi: Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹398.36 crore project to strengthen its communication infrastructure in Western Railway through the deployment of a high-capacity optical fibre cable (OFC) backbone across Ahmedabad and Ratlam divisions.

The project, approved under the umbrella work for Kavach implementation and LTE-based communication systems, will cover 1,929 route kilometres, including 1,456 km in Ahmedabad division and 473 km in Ratlam division.

The initiative forms part of a larger ₹27,693 crore national programme aimed at modernising railway signalling and communication systems. A sub-umbrella allocation of ₹2,800 crore has been earmarked for Western Railway, under which this project has been taken up.

The approved work involves the provision of 4×48 optical fibre cable backbone, designed to enhance capacity, reliability, and redundancy in railway communication systems. The upgraded infrastructure will support seamless data transmission and enable efficient functioning of modern signalling technologies, including Kavach.

By strengthening the communication backbone, the project is expected to improve operational efficiency, ensure better coordination across railway networks, and enhance safety systems through real-time data exchange.

Indian Railways said the initiative marks a significant step towards digital transformation, modernisation of infrastructure, and improved service delivery for both passenger and freight operations.
